Acer Iconia Tab ad at Computex slams iPad for what it lacks
Acer took advantage of the attention from the Computex show in Taipei this week to attack Apple directly in a stairway ad for the Iconia Tab A500. Those visiting part of the metro saw a two-part ad on either side of a staircase. One side seen by Engadget asked in Chinese why anyone would choose an iPad when it lacks an open OS, a high-resolution display, Dolby Surround audio, the Flash plugin, a microSD slot, or USB; the opposite side, as expected, touted all of those features on the Iconia Tab.
Some of the features are more conspicuous advantages, though others have had a negligible impact in the past. Motorola has tried to harp on Android's openness and support for Flash in promos like its Super Bowl campaign but has still sold few Xoom tablets. Critics have noted that few mainstream users understand what an open platform means or necessarily consider Flash a central issue.
The ad also doesn't touch on Acer's weaknesses, such as the display quality and noticeably heavier, thicker design.
While the ad was likely a momentary presence for the technology show, it did show Acer's newfound concern for the mobile space. The company's former CEO Gianfranco Lanci was forced out after the company repeatedly dismissed the threat of the iPad and let its revenues and market share collapse. The exact nature of what went wrong has been disputed. Company veterans have blamed Lanci for inaction, while he has complained about nationalism that prevented hiring non-Taiwanese engineers that he thought would improve Acer's standing in phones and tablets.
