Virgin Media trial 1.5Gbps broadband but customers unhappy
Virgin Media announced plans to trial 1.5GBps in East London, way back in April this year. The first stage in their trial happened on Friday.
The trial, in London’s Old Street ‘Silicon Roundabout’ is a 1.5Gb downstream/150mb upstream speed test for future areas. They are using the same infrastructure and technology as they have been using with the current 100MB service which covers most of the United Kingdom.
The 1.5Gbps speeds are said to be the world’s fastest cable connection speeds and over 240 times faster than the national average connection speed in the UK today.
Jon James, executive direct of broadband at Virgin Media said “As people are simultaneously connecting more gadgets to the internet and doing more online than ever before, we wanted to explore what our unique fibre optic network is capable of.
“At speeds of up to 1.5Gb, Virgin Media is delivering some of the fastest broadband in the world and, thanks to our ongoing investment, we’re able to anticipate and lead the way in meeting growing demand for bandwidth as future services and applications come online.”
As yet, there is no indication of when this service might roll out in the rest of the UK, but we would assume there is still some behind the scenes work to bring the Virgin Media infrastructure into line. We have discussed Virgin Media broadband in the past and focused on some of their problems with the fast service speeds and ‘capping’.
Sadly for Virgin Media, their forums have threads from many unhappy customers who feel their current service needs some work. Other cable and broadband forums have similar posts from customers who say they need to focus on getting their current services running properly before chasing for records.
