AMD officially announces Fusion APUs

Today AMD officially unveiled the company’s next generation of processors, the Fusion APUs. These accelerated processing units combine the functions of a CPU and GPU into a single chip that contains both a multi-core CPU and a DirectX 11-capable graphics solution. Fusion is designed to offer cost-conscious, high-performance processing for desktops, notebooks, and netbooks and be able to handle HD video but still provide the battery life buyers demand from a portable product.

Reviews should be going live soon so we’ll be sure to link those up when available. For now we can see that AMD is continuing its platform approach, focusing on the overall computer experience, not specifically having the best x or the fastest y.  It’s been tough convincing consumers that this is a viable route but all signs point to 2011 being the time when AMD’s platform approach comes together and actually delivers competitive, affordable products that have long enough battery lives to be competitive with Intel’s offerings.

From what we’ve heard they already have a number of design wins, including the ThinkPad X120e, which prove that the technology is a success with manufacturers. This is the first, and most important, step to getting the new APUs in the hands of consumers.
