AMD or Intel? Which One to Buy 2010-2011
Nowadays processors are very powerful. From high clock speeds to multi-core - all of the latest technologies have been incorporated rendering these chips literally high end rather than just being a fancy new launch......
But the question persists which one to buy?
Now considering your personal requirements you could make a list about what you would be doing with a new system of course considering most people aren't from the computing sector and keeping in mind that any new investment, in this case buying a new system is worth it.
Everyone who has bought an electronic equipment always looks for the best deals available in the market at that point of time. So here it is.
There is no question that Intel chips are the best in the market and that AMD, its headstrong competitor is always pacing to keep up.
For the past few months Intel's new core i7 series of chips have been released having six cores and having between 8 o 12 Mb of cache memory total.
On the other hand AMD had already released its Phenom II processors - ranging from 2 to 6 cores and having a total of 8 to 9 Mb cache memory
Now Intels i series and Phenom II directly compete with Intels Xeon and AMDs Opetron server processors respectively.
These chips are for the desktop segment for home use or office.
Now keeping in mind that you are getting a microprocessor on steroids the question arises which one to buy?
Intel's i series chips like i3, i5 and i7 are good ones to buy but considering for the price that you get makes you pause. AMDs phenom II chips are priced much lower than Intel's and for the performance you get its worth it.
Intel-High performance/ High price
AMD-High performance/ low price
Today its worth buying an AMD system and can be assured you get- very high performance, good quality and build with absolutely no hardware issues.
Intel prices blow a hole right through your pocket and if you buy an AMD system you could upgrade your ram + buy a 1.5 Tb hard-drive equaling the cost of buying an intel system with lower specifications.
Phenom II processors - 945, 955BE(black edition chips which are overclockable to a stable 3.6 Ghz and costs $ 20 more than 945), 965, 970 (all these re 4 core chips)
1055T, 1075, 1090BE( these are 6 core chips)
Intel i7 920 ( 4 cores), 980EE-extreme edition ( 6 cores, 32 nm manufacturing process)
All the others are 45 nm chips.
As for usability and performance any of these processors work flawlessly delivering maximum throughput with only mechanical drives bogging down system performance.
Conclusion: AMD wins heads up. Best bang for buck.
As for 2011 and the future where performance wont be an issue processor architectures will scale from tens to hundreds of cores which will quite be useless for everyday tasks at home or office unless you are running genetic mapping software, studying viruses, studying cryptographic algorithms, helping to analyse telescopic data of the universe from telescopes scattered across the globe etc.
